How long did it take me to land my very first job after graduation?
Spoiler: it wasn’t because of my performance – the answer comes at the end.

Hello dear friends of thought-provoking content, as promised, here’s my report from the Job Fair in Leipzig.

My conclusion upfront: It wasn’t a leap forward, but a time travel back to my early job-seeking years – overwhelmed, alone, without perspective. And sadly, this impression was confirmed in many conversations with exhibitors.

Big promise, small reality

The fair advertised 150 companies. In reality, there was only a manageable number of exhibitors in the congress hall – from temp agencies to industry & tech, public service and more.

What surprised me: more than half of the visitors had a migration background.

What shocked me: many companies seemed completely unprepared for that.

SMEs show how it’s done

Small and medium-sized enterprises answered my questions about inclusion, language support, and hiring processes directly and pragmatically. B2 German was usually sufficient, and many offered language courses. But: all job ads were only in German – barriers remain from the very beginning.

Corporates stuck in the past

At large, established companies, I felt transported back in time: German as a strict requirement, no support offered, no responsible HR people on-site, no clear answers on diversity or visa processes. Remote work? Met with skeptical looks. For many young talents: discouraging instead of motivating.

The visa dilemma

Many young people live in a visa carousel: a Jobseeker Visa allows you to stay and look for a job in Germany – but not to work. An actual work visa requires a signed contract. Deadlines, bureaucracy, and companies unwilling or unable to help make it a real career roadblock.

Young people at their limits

I spoke with many visitors who travel from fair to fair, hoping for a chance anywhere. The most common statement: “I’ll take any job!”

My conclusion

The majority of companies are clearly overwhelmed by the reality of today’s labor market. We urgently need more transparency, clear processes, communication at eye level, and language support to make integration truly possible.
