The Recruitment Paradox: Why Great Talent Gets Overlooked and Companies Miss Out

Imagine meeting someone at a park while walking your dog, at a quiet coffee shop, or through a dating app. Now imagine deciding in just 6 seconds whether this person could be your partner for life.

Sounds absurd, doesn’t it?

Yet, in modern recruitment, important decisions about people’s professional futures can happen just as quickly.

Through our participation in HR discussions within the EPIC – European Photonics Industry Consortium network, we regularly exchange experiences with HR professionals, company representatives, and recruitment agencies.

During one of these discussions, something caught our attention:

Some recruiters shared that they sometimes have just 6 to 8 seconds to review a CV and decide whether a candidate should move forward.

Six seconds to assess years of experience, technical expertise, achievements, and potential.

Can we really recognize great talent that quickly?

It’s Not the Recruiters’ Fault, It’s a Scale Problem

It is easy to blame recruiters, but the reality is more complex. Many companies receive hundreds of applications for a single position. Recruiters are under pressure to identify suitable candidates quickly, often with limited time and resources.

To manage high application volumes, companies increasingly rely on digital recruitment platforms, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and AI-supported tools.

These technologies can make hiring more efficient. But more applications and faster screening don’t necessarily lead to better matches.

This is particularly challenging in highly specialized industries such as Photonics, MedTech, Deep Tech, and Semiconductors, where finding the right experts can already be difficult.

Professionals in these industries often bring an impressive combination of technical expertise, industry knowledge, and practical problem-solving experience. Some have spent decades developing solutions, working across technologies, and turning complex challenges into real-world applications.

But how do you communicate all that potential in just a few lines on a CV?

And this creates a paradox:

  • Great talent can be overlooked. Even highly experienced professionals may struggle to communicate their full expertise and potential in a traditional CV.
  • Companies may miss the right people. When screening focuses too heavily on keywords, job titles, or predefined requirements, candidates with valuable transferable skills and potential can be missed.
  • The human connection gets lost. A CV tells us what someone has done, but rarely how they think, communicate, solve problems, or work with others.

The challenge isn’t simply finding more candidates. It’s recognizing the right people among them.

What Happens When Candidates Get the Chance to Explain?

During our discussions with recruitment professionals, one agency shared an interesting recommendation: candidates who reach the interview stage should prepare a short presentation using the STARR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection).

Instead of simply listing qualifications, candidates can explain a real challenge they faced, how they approached it, what they achieved, and what they learned.

The agency shared an example of how such a presentation helped a candidate demonstrate their expertise and sparked genuine interest during an interview.

This made us think:

If candidates can demonstrate their true potential through a short presentation, why wait until the interview?

Show Your Expertise Before the Interview

At SalesPro4U – Your People Partner for High-Tech, we are exploring exactly this question.

Through our work with high-tech professionals in career coaching, job search support, and market representation, we are developing and testing a new approach: the Job Application Video.

The idea is simple: complement the traditional CV with a short, structured video that gives professionals the opportunity to explain what they can really do.

Using the STARR method, we help candidates present their experience through three simple steps:

  • The Challenge (Situation & Task): What was the problem, and what was your responsibility?
  • The Solution (Action & Result): What did you do, and what difference did it make?
  • The Learning (Reflection): What did you learn, and how does that experience help you today?

This could be particularly valuable for professionals whose expertise goes far beyond a single job title or technical specialization.

What could this change?

  • For Candidates: An additional opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, achievements, and professional strengths beyond a traditional CV.
  • For Companies: A chance to discover expertise, problem-solving skills, and potential that might otherwise be overlooked during traditional screening.

Of course, a video cannot replace a CV, a personal conversation, or a fair assessment process. Not everyone feels comfortable presenting themselves on camera, and that should never be a disadvantage.

Our goal is to explore new ways of making expertise visible and hiring more human.

That’s why we are inviting both high-tech professionals who would like to test this approach and companies that are open to exploring new ways of discovering talent to join us.

We believe better recruitment starts with understanding people, not just screening documents.

Let's Rethink How We Discover Talent

Modern recruitment faces a real challenge: companies need to identify the right people efficiently, while professionals need opportunities to demonstrate what they can truly offer.

Technology can support this process, but it should never replace human judgment, curiosity, and meaningful conversations.

Great talent is more than a CV. And great recruitment is more than matching keywords.

At SalesPro4U, we believe there is room for a more human approach, especially in highly specialized industries such as Photonics, MedTech, Deep Tech, and Semiconductors.

And we want to explore new possibilities together!
