Episode 3 of Reinhard’s Tech Talk

What is TRL? Technology Readiness Level Explained

Reinhard explains the Technology Readiness Level (TRL), which is a way to measure how developed a technology is. It ranges from TRL 1, which is just an initial idea, all the way to TRL 9, meaning it’s fully ready for everyday use. NASA first created TRL in the 1970s for their space missions. For example, TRL 8 meant the technology was approved for space operations, and TRL 9 meant it had already been successfully used in space.

Reinhard points out that TRL also considers important things like intellectual property, having a strong patent plan, and making sure there are no legal issues preventing its use (freedom to operate). It even includes sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors. Reinhard stresses that the higher a technology’s TRL, the closer it is to being a real-world success.
